Preparing and Observing the Properties of Esthers Essay

Purpose The purpose of this experiment is to prepare and observe the properties of esters. The ester that will be synthesized in this methyl Salicylate Introduction Almost everybody is familiar with the fruity scents at their local grocery store. Many of these scents are esters. Most of the aromas we know represent a mixture of esters and other molecules like alcohol. The process of making ester is known as esterification. Esters are formed carboxylic acid and a carboxylic acid reacts with alcohol, water is also produced from this reaction. When not given enough time the salicylic acid will no dissolve in the methanol which the reaction will be incomplete which means the chances of producing an ester is low. The Methyl Salicylate had a wintergreen fragrance. When the solution in the test tube was placed in water there was a wax-like coating at the top of the solution. This is as a result of the carboxylic acid (salicylic acid) not being soluble in water. Discussion The ester that was formed in this experiment was methyl Salicylate. I had always wanted a brother, but a sister was born. Then I moved to America by the age of six. At age of seven my mom was back in the hospital and again gave a birth to a daughter. The first day I stepped in the school, I started up the trouble. First day of class I got in trouble for talking too much and starting up a fight. So I was suspended for 3 days because of a fight that I started. Down the road I didn’t do that good in my classes either but surprisingly I only failed one of my classes at the end of my freshmen year. But I wasn’t proud of my grades I had. I didn’t do no after school activities or any thing. I just always got in trouble with my teachers, administrators and especially with my parents. My sophomore year, I was more sober and I was mature, and I learned from my mistakes from past year. I started off by doing after school activities. I started off by playing football for my school and joined couple of clubs and started to volunteer for out of school activities. My sophomore year, I played JV and I also was dressing out for varsity team. I loved the game football so every day I tried my best to be on the varsity squad but I was the only sophomore who was the back up for the varsity starter. I got my lucky break when the starter got hurt and was out for the whole season. They put me in the game I was kind new to the environment and some of the players were way bigger then I. But I did pretty good for my first game as a varsity player. I was also doing pretty well in my studies I made up the classes that I failed in my freshmen year and I was going perfectly on track. My teachers and administrators were very astonished and amazed by seeing the changes in me. I didn’t do well at school at all, I had to many absences and I was getting in too much trouble again. So finally I dropped out from high school. I just worked all the time. I was out of the school for almost a year and a half, just working and working. I got sick and tired of doing the same thing and I wanted to start up my studies again. This time I made sure I don’t make the same mistakes I made in past. I just set up some goals and I am planning to stick to it. So far it has helped me out and hopefully it will later on down the road.

Before I get into what I believe in as a Catholic, I would like to give some background on the religion itself, because this has also shaped my beliefs. Catholicism comes from Christianity. Of all the religions, Christianity is the most widespread and has the largest number of members. (Smith, p.317) Christianity is based on actual history, and they have historical facts to back up a lot of the ideas. The word Catholic is generally taken to mean universal, although the Greek roots of the word mean according to (kata) the whole (holos). In the ancient Church, it was used to refer to a single, visible communion, separate from others, bonded together through faith in Jesus Christ (web). As far back as the ninth century, St. Cyril of Jerusalem stated: The Church is called Catholic, because it teaches universally and infallibly each and every doctrined which must come to the knowledge of men, concerning things visible and invisible, heavenly and earthly, because it brings every race of men into subjection to holiness, because it universally treats and heals every class of sins, and because it possesses within itself every conceivable form of virtue, in deeds and in words and in the spiritual gifts of every description. Catholics are followers of Jesus. Our journey begins at baptism, and we continue on that journey towards eternal happiness. There are two main ideas that separate Catholicism from Christianity. The first is that Catholics believe in the Church as its teacher. This means that just as you might need a math teacher to explain your textbook in a way that you understand, we need the leaders of the Church (Pope, bishops, and priests) to interpret the Bible. We shouldn't take everything the Bible says literally, and these leaders help us to apply its teachings to our lives. The second main idea is that there are seven Sacraments (baptism, confession, communion, confirmation, marriage, annointing of the sick, Holy Orders) that we need to incorporate into our lives so that we may live the teachings of the Church. It is one thing to hear how we should live our lives, but it is another to do. That is where the Sacraments help. The Church has laws governing the reception of all the sacraments. Members are expected to try and understand the meaning of the Church's rituals and to develop a full sacramental lifestyle. ( web) Catholicism has other teachings that are integral to the religion. Followers are expected to live according to the Ten Commandments of the Old Testament, the Gospel message of Jesus Christ, and the laws and moral teachings of the Church. I chose to read The Da Vinci Code because it has received excellent reviews and it explains philosophical concepts from the time of Jesus Christ. I was drawn to The Da Vinci Code as a film was released in 2006 and the first two novels had been excellent. I was attracted to the novel because the title gives a spooky and suspicious sense of atmosphere. The series is based in the modern world and the novels are based on code- breaking skills giving them a thriller nature. In this essay, I am going to be explaining anything confusing or puzzling that crop up in the prologue and how this may affect the readers sense of curiosity. Unlike the other novels, The Da Vinci Code begins with an action scene, leaving the reader curious. The title The Da Vinci Code indicates another code- breaking plot however it leaves readers wondering, what code is to be solved? The word code is quite vague and could imply there is a secret waiting to be unleashed. Dan Brown added the phrase The Da Vinci before code. Da Vinci is short for Leonardo da Vinci, a great painter, inventor and writer. A reader will be aware of this because Da Vinci is famous. Even though Da Vinci was regarded as a skilled engineer, none of his works linked to puzzles and codes. The title therefore leaves the reader in a puzzling state of confusion and the front cover shows a small portion of The Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, confirming that Da Vinci is linked to the novel. Dan Brown has cleverly constructed the title and cover, leaving readers debating over the plot, causing them to feel curious, drawing readers in to read the book. The first sentence appeals to our sense of sight and causes readers to feel curious. The sentence reads: Renowned curator Jacques Sauniere staggered through the vaulted archway of the museums Grand Gallery. The sentence introduces a character, Curator Jacques Sauniere and this causes the reader to question, who is Jacques Sauniere? Why is he the curator of the museum and how is he famous? The second part of the sentence involves the curator staggering through a vaulted archway. This implies many possibilities: The curator could have simply tripped or he might have even been chased. This leaves readers in suspense because they would want to know who is chasing the curator and why. The word staggered stresses a sense of trouble. This is quite powerful because it is immediate and causes the reader to feel startled. The sentence as a whole allows readers to visualise the setting and confirms that the curator is in a museum; however the gallery of the museum was described as grand, indicating that the museum is well known, making readers wonder if there is trouble in the building. And if so, why have security guards not arrived at the scene. Being a prologue, Dan Brown does not introduce many of the main characters until the 1st chapter, however two characters are introduced. Brown introduces the Museums curator Jacques Sauniere. He is depicted to be famous, because he was described as renowned and readers visualise Sauniere to be weak and helpless as he found it extremely difficult to heave a masterpiece. However, we assume Sauniere is part of a hidden organization, possessing a truth: If I die, the truth will be lost for ever. The quote evokes readers sense of curiosity, therefore causing them to wonder: Who is Sauniere? The second character, Albino, is after the curator and eventually captures him. He was broad and tall, with ghost- pale skin and thinning white hair. His irises were pink with dark red pupils, Albino is pictured as a dark, suspicious character causing readers to be inquisitive. Readers feel sorry for the curator when he is shot by Albino for lying about not knowing the secret. Albino leaves quickly, illustrating that he will return in the novel. Brown was correct in leaving out the many of the main characters because the prologue was there to leave readers in suspense and to create background information for the novel, preparing the reader. Dan Brown allows the reader to know that the book belongs to the thriller genre: As he had anticipated, a thundering iron gate fell nearby, barricading the entrance to the suite. The parquet floor shook. Far off, an alarm began to ring. The sentence uses a number of powerful words, attracting the reader. Thundering Iron Gate fell nearby allow readers to visualise a gigantic, grand security system. From the phrase, you want to know why the Iron Gate fell and so this starts to quiz readers. Barricading stresses a sense of foreboding because readers dont understand why the curator would want to lock himself in a museum, leaving readers in suspense as they wonder if there is a purpose behind his action, contributing to the hunch that he could be in danger. Far off, an alarm began to ring give readers the impression that there is a robbery occurring although the assumption is not true. Other ways in which the author allows the reader to identify that the book belongs to the thriller genre is using words such as thundering, roared and wincing. These words all suggest a thriller due to the fact that it allows readers to visualise the scene, appealing to their sense of sight. The Gun roared is portrays a murder scene confirming the genre however, readers develop an idea that a mystery is being conjured. In the prologue, we are told of a mysterious character however the description is quite vague adding to the mystery. All of the quotes and words above allow readers to know the genre of the book, preparing them for the rest of the novel. Throughout the prologue, readers will feel confused. Immediately introducing the curator, Jacques Sauniere, the prologue bemuses readers, causing them to wonder and question. However, Brown introduces Sauniere describing him as renowned. The word is powerful in many contexts: It allows readers to know that he is famous but more importantly, it makes them feel that they already know the curator, allowing questions to leave readers minds. Albino, the ghostly figure in the prologue causes reader to be curious because they do not know who he is and why he is after the curator. This is considered effective because it creates suspense for readers. Albino mentions something: Now tell me where it is. The phrase causes reader to guess what this particular item is, perplexing readers as well as leaving them in suspense. Calling the item it gives it importance and classifies that the thing is special. Towards the end of the prologue, we are told that the item is actually a secret, intriguing readers, as they want to know what the secret holds. Although there are many other phrases and sentences that leave you anxious, you are still given a complete plot of the prologue because the setting is well-described. The author did this intently because it triggers readers imagination. Confusion is effective in the introduction because the author has time to pick up on topics which are necessary at a particular point and then build up on them when they are needed later, creating suspense, preparing readers for the rest of the novel. The Last two sentences of the prologue are very powerful, concluding the prologue efficiently: Wincing in pain, he summoned all of his faculties and strength. The desperate task before him, he knew, would require every remaining second of his life. Wincing, faculties and desperate are all effective words used in the last two lines and they are excellent at describing the curator, giving readers a visual image of him. Wincing justifies that the curator is extremely weak and adding in pain emphasises the fact that he is going to die. We are told that he has a task to do before he dies, however we do not know what it is, adding to the suspense. Readers are drawn to the ending phrase, every remaining second of his life because it denotes that the task is significant for the events in the novel. You feel sorry for the curator because he is innocent and didnt deserve to be shot whereas you feel vengeful towards Albino. The sentence ends abrupt, asking readers many questions. They want to know: Is Sauniere dead? What is the desperate task he wanted to complete and what has happened to Albino? A cliff-hanger is formed by ending abruptly, evoking readers sense of curiosity. Therefore, the last two sentences of the prologue are successful at preparing the reader for the rest of the novel. The introduction to The Da Vinci Code is brilliant for preparing the reader for the rest of the novel by setting a good theme. The introduction leaves you in suspense, generating an urge for you to read on. All aspects of the prologue contribute to its excellence. The prologue is kept as simplistic as possible, providing background knowledge for readers. I have deeply enjoyed the book so far and I can say that readers will continue to feel a sense of thrill as they progress through the novel.

The world of Puritan New England, like the world of today, was filled with many evil influences. Many people were able to withstand the temptations of this darker side of the spiritual world, but still some fell victim to the supposed Satan’s will. Such offences against God, in thought, word, deed, desire or neglect, are what we define as sin (Schuler 14). In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, the reader is able to observe how one sin devastates three lives. Hester, Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth are all guilty of succumbing to temptation, anger, and desire, causing all to fit the definition of a sinner. Yet, Chillingworth’s iniquities raise him up above Hester and Dimmesdale on the level of diabolic acts. From the very moment Chillingworth is introduced, he is deceitful towards the Puritan society. Chillingworth appears in the novel, seeming to know nothing of the scene at the scaffold. He asks of a townsperson: â€Å"†¦who is this woman? – and wherefore is she here to set up to public shame?† (Hawhtorne 67). Yet, we find in the next chapter that he indeed knows who Hester is, because Chillingworth is the lawful husband of her. He decieves the people of Boston to avoid the humiliation his wife brought upon him. In this respect, Chillingworth sins against the eight commandment, â€Å"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour† (Schuler 26).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Now, one could state that Hester also sins against the eighth commandment. She never reveals the name of her daughter’s father. And it is stated that one must always tell the truth. Yet, it also states that one must keep a secret whenever asked to do so, and not say anything to damage another’s reputation (Schuler 27). So Hester, in fact, did not sin. She never denies that Dimmesdale was the father of Pearl. She also could not admit the truth because she would break a promise to Dimmesdale and damage his reputation. Dimmesdale also may be accused of this crime, but likewise, he never outwardly states that he was not the father of this child, he merely chooses to remain silent on the matter. While Chillingworth is guilty of breaking the eighth commandment, he also breaks the fifth commandment â€Å"You shall not kill† (Schuler 24). It fact that Chillingworth did not directly kill anyone in the novel. Nevertheless, a serious act of anger or hatred is considered a sin under this commandment (Schuler 25).

Increased communication may minimize the shame and secrecy associated with an unwanted pregnancy and make young people more likely to take advantage of supports and services in their families and communities.

A key character that ensures we enjoy the film throughout is captin jack sparrow. The first time we meet jack he is portrayed as a powerful figure standing tall on top of his ship. As the scene progresses we see that he is drunk and unorganised sailing on his own on a sinking boat. The director shows us this by using a wide array of camera shots and other techniques. When we first see jack he is standing on top of his ship. Although he is standing tall and proud his clothes are weather beaten and he has clearly been at sea for a long time.The low angle camera shots that the director uses help the impression that he is powerful and strong. The director also uses an over the shoulder shot to help connect the audience to jack. The director then thatters this illusion by panning down the mast to reveal that he is on a small boat, that is quickly taking on water ,all on his own. The director does this to make jack an instantly likeable character and to make us want to fing out more about him. The change from jack being a drunk to a skilled swordfighter makes the character of jackmore interesting.The second time we meet jack he is in the blacksmiths where William turner is an apprentice. The camera angle that the director uses a wide shot so that you see that the workshop is small and to emphasize that he is agile and quick. The director does this so we find out slightly more about jack and become more interested. Through out the film jack is portrayed as an anti- hero and this is emphisized as jack does not want to shoot will as he says ‘’this bullet is not ment for you ‘’ meaning he went to port royal with a mission. The director does this to reveal a major plot point. he director of â€Å"the pirates of the caribbean† portrays miss elizabeth swann as a naive and dependent girl but this impression is ruined the second time we meet her. in the first encounter we see elizabeth trying on a dress her father has bought her from london. s he seems very feminine, well educated and wealthy but she has something to hide. a medallion she had taken off of will whe she and her majestys navy first found him. this adds to the enjoyment of the film by adding a twist that changes the whole story as this medallion lands elizabeth and the man she loves in alot of trouble. My high school philosophy teacher, the president and founder of the program, had asked me to join the group since she was aware of my successful participation in other volunteer activities. After one year, she appointed me vice president, a position that I viewed as a challenge. I immediately loved the experience, once I had defined the problem: the volunteers were frequently doing homework, instead of spending time getting the children to accomplish their tasks. Working with teachers and students from different disciplines, I investigated the problems of educational design and soon realized that my own constructive concepts would greatly benefit the program. I began confidently expressing my ideas in the debriefing meetings. We cannot change what we do until we change how we think, and we cannot change how we think until we change who we are. I felt compelled to state this idea during one meeting. Perhaps the cold, rainy atmosphere outside affected the acceptance level of attendees inside, because the deafening silence that followed indicated their disapproval of my attitude and my words. I was convinced that there was an impending need for the program to be updated, but I was not factoring in my age in relation to the other members. Still, I persisted. I continued to explore the educational process. â€Å"Reframing! That is the point.† I then encouraged the group to improve continuously, to change our paradigm, and to think out-of-the-box. My challenging dream was to analyze what we were doing for the students and to respond more creatively to the overwhelming problem, the students’ lack of interest in academic achievement. We should teach students to improve their vocabulary by using context to understand new words, instead of memorizing lists; we could match them with pen pals who shared particular interests, thereby successfully improving their writing skills; and we could correlate scientific theories with real innovations, such as CD, to show them the important role that science plays in their lives. Constructive action would promote classroom interest. As I continued speaking, the mood of my audience changed; tension dissipated as they heard my sincere pleas for constructive changes that would make a difference in local educational opportunities. I observed shared glances that were thoughtful, touching, and even approving. My teacher, more than anyone, nodded her agreement. When it was her turn to speak, she used the wording that we had prepared together. I took a deep breath, feeling relaxed and completely fulfilled. About the Vice President of the United States Sometimes, the Vice President of the United States is remembered more for things they say wrong than for things they do right. If we do everything right, if we do it with absolute certainty, theres still a 30% chance were going to get it wrong, said Vice President Joe Biden. Or as Vice President Dan Quayle put it, If we dont succeed, we run the risk of failure. Thomas R. Marshall, 28th Vice President, said of his office, Once there were two brothers. All verbal gaffes and disparaging remarks aside, the vice president remains our second highest federal government official and a single heartbeat away from ascending to the presidency. Electing the Vice President The office of Vice President of the United States is established along with the office of President of the United States in Article II, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution, which also creates and designates the Electoral College system as the method by which both offices are to be elected. Before enactment of the 12th Amendment in 1804, there were no separately nominated candidates for vice president. Instead, as required by Article II, Section 1, the presidential candidate receiving the second-highest number of electoral votes was awarded the vice presidency. In essence, the vice presidency was treated as a consolation prize. It took only three elections for the weakness of that system of choosing the vice president to become obvious. In the 1796 election, Founding Fathers and bitter political rivals John Adams - a Federalist - and Thomas Jefferson - a Republican - ended up as president and vice president. To say the least, the two did not play well together. Fortunately, the government of then was quicker to fix its mistakes than the government of now, so by 1804, the 12th Amendment had revised the electoral process so that candidates ran specifically for either president or vice president. Today, when you vote for a presidential candidate, you are also voting for his or her vice presidential running mate. Unlike the president, there is no constitutional limitation on the number of times a person can be elected vice president. However, constitutional scholars and lawyers disagree whether a twice-elected former president can be elected vice president. Since no former presidents have ever tried running for vice president, the issue has never been tested in court. Qualifications to Serve The 12th Amendment also specifies that the qualifications required to serve as vice president are the same as those required to serve as president, which are briefly: be a natural born U.S. citizen; be at least 35 years old, and have lived in the U.S. for at least 14 years. My mother believed and my father believed that if I wanted to be President of the United States, I could be, I could be Vice President! said Vice President Joe Biden. Duties and Responsibilities of the Vice President Having been kept in the dark about the existence of the atomic bomb by President Roosevelt, Vice President Harry Truman, after taking over as president, remarked that the vice presidents job is to go to weddings and funerals. However, the vice president does have some significant responsibilities and duties. A Heartbeat from the Presidency Certainly, the responsibility most on the mind of vice presidents is that under the order of presidential succession, they are required to take over the duties of the President of the United States at any time the president becomes, for any reason, unable to serve, including death, resignation, impeachment, or physical incapacitation. As Vice President Dan Quayle said, One word sums up probably the responsibility of any vice president, and that one word is to be prepared. President of the Senate Under Article I, Section 3 of the Constitution, the vice president serves as president of the Senate and is allowed to vote on legislation when necessary to break a tie. While the Senates supermajority vote rules have reduced the impact of this power, the vice president can still influence legislation. As president of the Senate, the vice president is assigned by the 12th Amendment to preside over the joint session of Congress in which the votes of the Electoral College are counted and reported. In this capacity, three vice presidents John Breckinridge, Richard Nixon, and Al Gore have had the distasteful duty of announcing that they had lost the presidential election. On the brighter side, four vice presidents John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Van Buren, and George H. W. Bush - were able to announce that they had been elected president. Despite the vice presidents constitutionally assigned status in the Senate, the office is generally considered to be a part of the Executive Branch, rather than the Legislative Branch of the government. Informal and Political Duties While certainly not required by the Constitution, which wisely includes no mention of politics, the vice president is traditionally expected to support and advance the policies and legislative agenda of the president. For example, the vice president might be called on by the president to draft legislation favored by the administration and talk it up in an effort to gain the support of members of Congress. The vice president might then be asked to help shepherd the bill through the legislative process. The vice president typically attends all Presidential Cabinet meetings and may be called on to act as an adviser the president on a wide variety of issues. The vice president might stand in for the president at meetings with foreign leaders or state funerals abroad. In addition, the vice president sometimes represents the president in showing the administrations concern at sites of natural disasters. Stepping Stone to the Presidency Serving as vice president is sometimes considered a political stepping stone to being elected president. History, however, shows that of the 14 vice presidents who became president, 8 did so because of the death of the sitting president. The likelihood that a vice president will run for and be elected to the presidency depends largely on his or her own political aspirations and energy, and the success and popularity of the president with which he or she served. A vice president who served under a successful and popular president is likely to be seen by the public as a party-loyal sidekick, worthy of advancement. On the other hand, a vice president who served under a failed and unpopular president may be considered as more of a willing accomplice, worthy only of being put out to pasture.

In William Saroyan's play The Oyster and the Pearl there is a lot of symbolism. The theme of the play is to take it easy and relax and life will be much happier. Harry Van Dusen is a barber that has a philosophy of "Take it easy." He tries to spread his philosophy by talking to people when he is cutting their hair. It was almost as if the haircuts were just a way of getting people in the barbershop to talk. The hats that Harry wore symbolized the attitude that he was in. The sea symbolizes life. The name of the small town that the story takes place in is called O.K.-by-the-Sea. That name symbolizes that life isn't perfect but by taking it easy it can be more fun. Vivian McCutcheon is a new school teacher that does everything "by the book." She just tries to fit in. This is symbolized by her wanting a poodle haircut. She didn't really want one but she was trying to be like everyone else. Harry knew this and that is why he would not give her the haircut. Harry's ph ilosophy is superior to Vivian's philosophy of fitting in. This is shown by how much happier Harry and everyone else that lives by his philosophy is than Vivian.All the little things in the story have symbolism too. The bottle of sea water stands for the details of life that have to be looked for. Clay and Clark Larrabee symbolize the problems and difficulties that occur in life. Two of the most important symbols in the story are the oyster and the pearl. The oyster symbolizes obstacles that must be overcome to get to hope(the pearl). Beach combing represents looking for the obstacles to get to hope. The pearl is hope. When Clay found the oyster he thought there was a pearl inside.

And looking at how we speak and communicate with people and the benefits it has Task 1 Children and young people Describe how to establish respectful, professional relationships with children and young people It’s most important that first of all you talk to a child or young person that is at a level that is appropriate to their age.Making sure that you come across as calm caring and approachable person, who is also willing to listen to what they have to say and making them feel that what they have to say is also important. Also setting out mutual ground rules so you both know what is expected from each other so there is no confusion from either side.And simple things like learning a person’s name and pronouncing it correctly, being alert to their feeling, giving time to pupi ls as an individual and using lots of positive and encouraging words when speaking to children and young people. Describe with examples how to behave appropriately for a child or young person’s stage of development When communicating with children or young people you need to make sure you are communicating at a level that is at their â€Å"age related† stage of their development.But keeping in mind that children and young people mature and develop at different stages, and children with â€Å"special needs† may need more help from different professions to assess their development stage. Children in foundation and key stage 1 these pupils are still developing their language and communication skills so it’s important that when we speak to them we get down to their level so we are not towering over them which may be intimidating to small children.When communicating with small children its important you have their undivided attention as they have a limited att ention span a good way of making sure they have understood what you have been speaking about is to get them to relay the information back to you that way you know they have understood this is also a good way to asses there development stage as well. When they become upset or hurt we can put are arm around them to comfort them. We should be enthusiastic when asking them to do things or learn something, this will encourage them to give it a go, and ots of smiles at them are reassuring Key stages 2 By this stage children have a better understanding on how to communicate with their peers and other adults. It’s important that we listen and talk to them at their own level, not talking down at them and make eye contact. We mustn’t talk over them or be sarcastic and we should be positive about what is being said. Now that the children are a little bit older we should encourage them to take pride in their work and the things they do. Key Stage 3 and 4Now that the children are o lder they will be able to communicate effectively with others, we can behave by talking at their level and not talking down to them this may make young people feel intimidated or belittle. It’s also important to set some mutual ground rules so they know what is excepted of them and what the consequences for misbehaving will be make sure you are very clear of what you expect. If they are upset or hurt be sympathetic to their feeling and needs, we can also offer advice and guidance if appropriate.For those children that may be disruptive or not listening, try to encourage them to participate more or remind them what is expected of them Describe how to deal with disagreements between children and young people Some disagreements between children depending on their age they may be able to solve between themselves, but for those that can’t it’s important that we stay neutral and not take any sides. When managing a disagreement it’s important we go back to the b eginning where the argument started and give each child a chance to tell their side of the story.It’s important that the pupil feels they have been heard and acknowledged. It’s also important that the children discuss how the situation has made them feel and possibly give them the chance to come up with a solution themselves on how the disagreement could be resolved. For arguments that maybe more serious it could be advised that the children involved are separated from others and given time out to calm and think about what has happened, we must also encourage children to understand and respect other peoples feeling and emotions.Then we need to work out whether any apologies are required or further steps need to be taken. Describes how own behaviour could: -promote effective interaction with children and young people Children often lead by example, so we must lead the way by showing them how to, with good communication skills, using appropriate language and being a good , positive role model. Always set boundaries so they know what to expect and what is also expected of them.Show them respect and use genuine praise, and build confidence and trust. -impact negatively on interaction with children and young people If you look at some of the opposites that I have talked about above such as bad or low communication this may cause a barrier between you and the pupils which will prevent you hearing and seeing what they won’t or what they are doing. Using inappropriate language they may pick it up and start using it, criticing, teasing, belittling or disregarding their efforts will lower their self-esteem and confidents .Always mean what u say, don’t break trust or confidence as they will feel like you can’t protect or help them. Adults Describe how to establish respectful, professional relationships with adults To establish a respectful professional relationship it’s im portant that we communicate well and offer each other help and support where needed. â€Å"You should use language that other adults (including parents/carers, colleagues, volunteers or students) are likely to understand, avoid using jargon or technical language unless you are sure they understand its meaning. (T Kamen 2010 pg. 71) Whether you are speaking to a colleague, parent/carer or someone from another profession it’s important that you are practical, you may be working with someone who is unfamiliar to the surroundings or need help to find things, also make sure you are informative, you may need to give information and support to someone regarding an issue or situation they know nothing about, act in a professional manner by demonstrating personal courtesy and integrity it’s never appropriate to â€Å"gossip† .Being Emotional have a sense of humour where appropriate being caring and understanding to peoples situation. Developing and promoting good effect ive relationships with the people you work with helps to maintain a positive learning environment for pupils, parents/carers and also staff. Describe the importance of adult relationships as role models for children and young people It’s common for children to copy and model the attitudes, behaviour and actions of adults around them.It’s important that people working with children then understand the impact they can make on a child’s social and emotional development. Being a good role model means we should use good positive and encouraging communication skills, speak to others in a manner we wish to be spoken to, be friendly helpful and considerate to other people. Work cooperatively, take turns to speak not over the top of other and show the importance of sharing.The more we show this through our own interaction and relationships with other adults the more likely children will realise what a guild line is to appropriate socially acceptable behaviour. Task 2 Des cribe how communication with children and young people differs across different age ranges and stages of development Young children in foundation stage and key stage 1 age this age will still be developing the language and communication skills and will need to be reminded to take it in turns when speaking and reminded of the importance of listening to others.When talking to young children it’s important that we speak clearly, slowly and use words that aren’t too big that they won’t understand, it’s important that we check that they have understood what we have said by asking questions and asking them to repeat what we have said. By the time children get to key stage 2 they are starting to mature in the way they communicate with their peers and their teachers. Pupils by this stage have a better understanding of how to communicate and will be less self-centre and more considerate of others.You may need to remind some children about waiting for their turn to speak this may be down to immaturity or possibly their personalities. Also by this stage they will understand bigger words but may still need the meaning of some words explained. By the time they get to key stage 3/4 young people my become more self-conscious about speaking in front of others and be embarrassed easily, it’s important that we give lots of time to prepare and plan for these things and loads of encouragement along the way.Also by this stage they may be using lots of alternative ways of communicating with their peers and other adults such as phone texting, email and possibly social networks. Young people by now will have a good understanding of formal and informal language, and know how to communicate better with people and have a good use of more complexed words. Within each of these different stages you may be asked to work with children with special educational need, where you may have to adapt your communication skills further to meet their independent needs and abilities.Describe the main differences between communicating with adults and communicating with children and young people There are many similar communication skills we use that are the same when dealing with adults and children such as remaining eye contact, responding to what they’re saying, treating them with respect and courtesy, and also using non-verbal communication such as smiling or nodding. When speaking with children it’s important to encourage good communication skills by demonstrating this so we need to communicate clearly, concise and at a level that is equivalent to their age and needs.Make sure you are actively listening and positive responding, offering praise and encourage, or support if need. But when speaking to adults are language is more complex but must be on a professional level, we must also respect other people’s ideas and thoughts even if you’re not sure about them. We may even use different ways of communicating such as t exts, emails, notices or letters. When communicating with people with earing impairment / deaf, medical problems, special educational needs, poor vision or blind it’s important that we speak clearly, appropriately and slow are speech if necessary, use visual aids such as pictures photography and flash cars. Maintain good eye contact and positive body language. For someone who is hearing impaired or deaf, be sure you face the person so they can lip read or use sign language if you know it.Also if dealing with a visual impaired child make sure you address them by name so they know you are speaking to them, and those with some vision sit them at the front of the class so they have a better chance of seeing you and the board â€Å"It is possible that you will adapt the way you communicate with them without even realising that you are doing it, we often change the way we react to others depending on the way in which they react to us† (L Burnham, B Baker 2010 pg. 49) Describe how to deal with disagreements between the practitioner and children and young people The first thing to remember is never get into an argument with a child or young person you must stay professional and calm at all times. It could be useful to explain to the child what you expect and how their behaviour is unacceptable and why it’s not appropriate but acknowledge that here is a problem and be understanding to their feelings. If the problem starts to escalate you may need to walk away and ask for advice or help from a 3rd party.If you are a bystander you may need to intervene and offer assistants or advice on the situation or report what you have seen depending on the seriousness of the situation -the practitioner and other adults I think one of the most important things to remember If you find yourself in a disagreement with another adult is not to let the situation escalate. â€Å"where there are areas of conflict with other adults ,you will need to show sensitivity an try and resolve the problem as soon as possible, the longer a problem is allowed to go on , the more difficult it will be to put right† (L Burnham, B Baker 2010 pg. 6) So it’s important that individuals involved take time out together to discuss the issue openly and honestly and work out how it may be resolved, as adults we can misread or perceive information wrongly an even just miscommunicate with each other by talking about the issue these confusions can be quickly rectified , It’s hard to work efficiently and effective if the atmosphere you are working in is full of tension or bad feelings. If the disagreement cannot be resolve between yourselves you may need to involve a mediator to offer advice or help on how things can be resolved.If by this stage you cannot resolve the issue the school will have a grievance procedure to then follow this will then usually require you to put the issue or concerns in writing and your line manager and head teacher being involved. For serious conflict issues that cannot be resolve you may need to seek help from the school governors or the local authorities Task 3 Identify relevant legal requirements and procedures covering confidentiality, data protection and the disclosure of informationWithin school we are require to gather a variety of information regarding children and young people from medical or health issues, Personal information, records from other schools and many other things too, all the information that we gather is protected by the data protection Act 1998 the principles regarding this legislation is that all information collected can only be used for the purpose it was collected for, must be protected and stored securely, relevant. Information mustn’t be kept longer than necessary and must be accurate.Information collected regarding issues under the Every Child Matters Act 2004 which will look further into the safeguarding an welfare of children once again this information is confidential and will only be used and shared on a need to know bases its important that we know when and when not to share information. You are entitled to see all information that has been collected only about yourself â€Å"your right to know† this is covered by the Freedom of Information Act 2000.Describe the importance of reassuring children, young people and adults of the confidentiality of shard information and the limits of this It’s important that we reassure children, young people and adults that information about them is kept confidential, safe and only be used where and when necessary and only for the duration required, we must reassure them this to maintain their trust and security, Parents/carers and colleagues may hare certain information with you regarding a child to help you understand any particular needs that the child may have all information given to you must be kept confidential. It s their right to privacy that this information is kept confidential and not passed on for others to talk and gossip about as this will also break their trust and make them feel betrayed. Children and young people also need to know that their information is kept confidential and won’t put them at risk of being teased or bullied.Adults also need the peace of mind that the information regarding their child or family isn’t going to become the talk of the playground. There may be times when you need to share information that you have collected but this must only be on a â€Å"need to know basis† with your other colleagues, In most cases parental consent is necessary before sharing information with other professional bodies that may be working with a child, although the school does have a legal obligation to share information if they think there may be a risk to a child.If you are going to pass on any confidential information then it is important that you tell the person you are going to do so and explain to them the reasons why and with whom. Identify the kinds of situations when confidentiality protocols must be breached Con fidentiality protocols may need to be breeched on such occasions, if you suspect a child is being abused, harmed or in danger.We must also break these protocols if a child discloses to you that they are being abused in any way, but it’s important that you tell the individual that you may not be able to maintain confidentiality if they disclose something to you, you should never promise to keep a† secret† but reassure them that information will only be shared for their own safety and wellbeing and only with those that need to know about it. Sex offenders can be men or women it does not matter about what gender the sex offenders are because either way the adult is the one who is taking the innocents of a child.
